A very special Dutch storage chest of solid plank construction in jackfruit. The chest and feet are covered with elaborately formed brass mounts. The Chest rests on ball feet typical of the Dutch style. Two large brass hinges with pierced finials secure the lid to the back. People owned a number of chests, the many moves from post to post undertaken by the trading company officials in the course of their careers made the chest an indispensible item of furniture in every household. They were mainly used for storage, but due to their striking appearance also served as a display of wealth by the owner.
